Please keep in mind that connecting with a specific customer or specific market does not mean that you exclude those who don’t quite fit the profile. Rather, it allows you to focus your messaging on those who are most likely to buy from you.

STEP 1: Assess Your Products and Services

One of the barriers to reaching your target audience is the failure to understand the problems that your products and services solve for potential customers. The more knowledgeable you are about your products and services, the better able you will be to understand and know your ideal customer. When assessing your products and services determine what differentiates them from the competition. How can your business uniquely solve your ideal customers’ problems?

STEP 2: Create Your Ideal Customer Profile

Study the demographics of the marketplace. Describe your ideal customer in great detail. In so doing, you answer the question of why he or she would be most likely to purchase your goods and services. Your description should go beyond the business industry and include age, socioeconomic status, geographic location, gender, ethnicity and race. For a deeper assessment, go beyond basic demographics and add a psychographic profile. Consider personality traits, values, and beliefs. In other words, do your best to capture how your ideal customer thinks. Ultimately, this information helps you to develop a marketing strategy and tactics that are most effective in getting your share of the market.

 STEP 3: Create the Experience

Once you have a clear understanding of who your products best serve, begin crafting clear and compelling messaging that will capture the attention of your niche audience and charge them up. Be prepared to adapt to ever emerging information. And, as you attain clearer insight into your ideal customer, your content strategy and marketing campaigns may need to shift. Remember, that shifting sands can turn into solid foundations.

So, how do you get to know your ideal customer? Assess your products and services and create customer profiles.

Knowing your business and the people it best serves drives sound marketing campaigns, saves money, and creates productive experiences.
