Independence Day 

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” ~ excerpt from The Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776

 Independence. What comes to mind when you think about the Fourth of July? Do fireworks, picnics, barbeques or parades fill your thoughts? Do you envision beaches, hot summers, waving American flags, and a long weekend?  These traditional symbols of Independence Day decorate our landscape, but the annual remembrance of July 4, 1776, the day our nation’s forefathers penned the Declaration of Independence represents so much more.

On Independence Day, we celebrate our nation’s freedom from British tyranny.  We salute liberty and recommit to the values of our democracy.  We recognize the brave men and women who throughout the past 243 years have fought and sacrificed to preserve our rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

This Independence Day,

as a new sun rises on the ugliness of pervasive racism and sexism that continually disrupt and destroy lives, ask yourself how you can make a positive difference. Each of us possess one of the most potent catalysts we can employ: our vote.  It’s up to each of us to use our voting power to make our voices heard; to put men and women in office who will listen and advocate on behalf of civility, decency, and the declaration that all men and women are created equal.  It’s up to each of us to honor our independence and vote.  Get prepared, learn the rules and when the time comes, vote.

This year, Independence Day follows the first two televised debates between 20 candidates for the Democratic Party’s nomination to the United States presidency.  Yes, they are off and running!  Start your due diligence – research the candidates and the issues.

Investigate the causes, platforms and positions. Study the voting requirements for your city and state so that you are well informed when walking into the voting booths across America in the coming months.

Now, perhaps more than ever before, we must take time this Independence Day to promote love, unity, diversity, and inclusion.  Remember, your vote represents power – the power to change, influence and honor. So, while you relax on the beach, celebrate during a parade or barbeque with family and friends this Independence Day, spend a few moments lifting each other up and propelling each other forward. Celebrate July 4 with a message of inclusion, unity and diversity; and be prepared to vote.
